Alex Lau

Alex Lau is a freelance photographer based in New York City, known for his dynamic, fresh approach to food photography. Born in Queens and raised in San Francisco, Alex’s creative journey has been anything but linear. A true multi-hyphenate, he’s explored jazz, competitive swimming, weightlifting, and even had a stint as a celebrity dog-sitter before finding his true calling behind the camera.

His path to photography was serendipitous – a last-minute application landed him a summer internship with Bon Appétit’s visuals team, sparking a deep passion for capturing the world of food. This pivotal experience led to an internship at Boston Magazine, where he honed his skills as both a digital writer and photographer.

Returning to New York, Alex quickly made his mark with staff roles at Food & Wine and Bon Appétit, eventually becoming a key member of the latter’s photo team.

Today, Alex’s work reflects a vibrant blend of storytelling, technical skill, and an eye for the unexpected. His images are as diverse as his background – bold, authentic, and always full of life.
